Lewis Cemetery | From Lexington on hwy #68:go about 12 miles, and take the turn off to
Wilmore, hwy 29. You go through Wilmore on hwy #29 about 2 miles, turn left on to Handy's Bend Rd. You go down this road about a mile, past Figg's Lane on the left, go to the first gate on the left at the top of the hill. You will see a little farm house setting back off the road. The cemetery is about 25 yards on the left of the drive, after going in the gate. I think you may have a hard time seeing it, not much left there anymore. |
Arron Farra Cemetery | This cemetery is on the west side of U.S. 27 across the road from the Oldham Subaru Car Dealership. The property where it is located is currently being developed into a shopping center where the new Kohl's Department Store is opening. The cemetery was moved from its original location to another site on the property next to the main road into the development. This was done in compliance with a cemetery preservation ordinace Jessamine County and the City of Nicholasville passed about two years ago. All the bodies with orginal caskets were exhumed, placed in individual vaults and reinterred at the new location. The cemetery was mapped and plotted prior to moving so all the bodies and stones would be placed back as close to each other as they were originally buried. The iron fence and stones bordering the cemetery was placed back as it was orginally constructed. Charles Ham, Ernestine Ham, and Howard Curry Teater of the Jesamine County Historical Society were prersent during the removal and reinterrment of the graves.
