Henry4 Sanders (Great Grandpa Sanders was known as Grandpap Sanders to Grandaddy Newt, my great-grandfather. He was an "honry old guy", also according to my great grandfather Newt. He came to Monroe County around 1834 or so. He married Grandma Nancy Heathman in Madison co, Kentucky and then Mahala Jennings in Monroe County several months after Nancy Died. We believe that Grandma Nancy is buried at the Sanders cemetery on what was then the original Wiley Sanders' farm. This farm was later owned by Christy, Henry's brother. The farm is now owned by the Loves of Madison. Grandpap Sanders was one of the founders of Oak Grove Church and Cemetery and that is where Mahala is buried and where most or almost all of his children are buried. I believe he established this church after Grandma Sanders passed away, therefore she wasn't buried here. On the 1870 Federal Census Monroe County, Missouri that I obtained from Steve Kemp-It states that the following were in Grandpa Sanders' Household. Henry Sanders, male age 55 born Kentucky-farmer, Mahala, female age 55 born Missouri-Keeps house, Joseph male age 20 b Mo. farm Laboror, Jeannie, female age 20 b MO, at school, Alexander male age 16, born MO farm laborer, Willie age 15, born MO-farm laboror, Lucy female age 13 born MO-at home, George male age 40 b. MO-farm laborer, and Minerva Howell, femage age 36 b. MO-domestic servant. (she was the older black lady that Grandaddy Newt remembers from Grandpap Sanders household.

I think Minerva was once "owned" by probably Henry C Howell(or his father, Maj. William C Howell). In the "History of Monroe county", It is stated that William Howell had an estate of 4,000 acres of land and had been a prominent slave owner before the war. But while his slave property was swept away by the war, his land, consisting of a number of farms, was left and his son (Henry) succeeded to an ownership of his share of the estate) (Claypool, n.d..) (Oral History from Minnie Oka Heathman Farrell, n.d..) (Oak Grove Cemetery Grave Stones, n.d..) was born on Dec 12, 1814 at Madison Co, Kentucky (Claypool.) (Oral History from Minnie.) (Oak Grove Cemetery Grave.). He married Nancy Heathman, daughter of Benjamin Heathman and Mary(Polly) Wood, on Oct 26, 1837 at Monroe, Missouri. He married Mahala Jennings in 1848. He died on Apr 24, 1902 at Monroe, County, at age 87 (Claypool.) (Oral History from Minnie.) (Oak Grove Cemetery Grave.).

She was born on May 25, 1840 at Monroe, Missouri (Oral History from Minnie.). She married Jeptha Johnson Heathman, son of Benjamin Heathman and Priscilla Hines, on Jan 5, 1860 at Monroe, Missouri (Ibid.) (Monroe Co. Marriage Records.). She died on Mar 13, 1904 at Duncan's Bridge, Monroe, Missouri, at age 63 (Oral History from Minnie.).

(2) Mary Ann5 Sanders(Nancy Elizabeth Budrow's grandfather.). Her married name was Dulin (Ibid.). She was born on Aug 4, 1841 at Madison/Woodlawn?, Monroe, Missouri (Ibid.). She married Samuel Gamaliel Dulin on Dec 13, 1857 at Monroe, Missouri (Ibid.). She died on Jun 26, 1910 at Fowler Colorado, Fowler, Colorado, at age 68 (Ibid.).

(5) Nancy A.5 Sanders. Her married name was Botkins. She was born circa 1842 at Monroe, Missouri (Ibid.). She was born in 1846 at Monroe, Missouri. She married Basil Botkins circa 1866 at Monroe, Missouri (Ibid.). She died on Jun 5, 1871.

(6) Martha T.5 Sanders. Her married name was Gaines. She was born on Feb 2, 1848 at Monroe, Missouri. She married George W. Gaines, son of Thomas Gaines and Nancy Switzer, on Apr 2, 1863 at Monroe, Missouri, USA (Ibid.) (E-mail and Oral Communication from Mary Alice Dell., n.d..). She died on Dec 13, 1930 at Monroe, Missouri, at age 82.

(9) Kiley Jackson(Bud)5 Sanders (Steve Kemp has this uncle as Wiley Alexander Sanders. He is probably right since I think that Mahala's parents are Alexander and Drucilla Jennings. Will wait at this time to change. 5/18/97) was born in 1853 at Monroe, Missouri. He died on Oct 29, 1871 at Monroe, Missouri.
