Circuit Court Index Listing

Filed in Frankfort, Kentucky, these court orders deal with residents of early Jessamine County. The names of individuals appearing in the orders was compiled by Billy Bowers during the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, and her manuscript is held by the Jessamine County Historical and Genealogical Society, Nicholasville, Kentucky. With Billy Bowers’ kind permission, her manuscript has been reformatted and alphabetized for the JCHGS. Anna Ash, Dorene Fox-Sprague, and Connie Shotts volunteered to transfer the records to computer formatting, which allowed the names to be conveniently alphabetized. General Notes, contributed by Connie Shotts: all items were retyped exactly as printed on the copy received from Clyde Bunch unless specifically noted below. This means that separate entries will appear for a Sam., Sam. And Sam’l with the same last name, for example. The items included in parentheses are as they appear in the copy, e. g., “(Fain?)” following Evan Finn, and “(horse)” following Frederick, both in box 16. Variations in the spelling of last names and first names was maintained as separate entries (for example, “Clark” and “Clarke”, and “Jessee”, “Jesse”, and “Jessy”. Variations in the appearance of the first name in full form, or a variety of abbreviations was maintained. An individual named Thomas may appear as Thos., Thom or Thomas and is listed separately for each. A period was placed at the end of every name I thought was likely an abbreviation for a longer name. I may have made some mistakes in names that were unfamiliar to me – i. e., the name could have been the full name. Notes for items in specific boxes: The Blackstone Bernathy in box 16 is very likely Abernathy rather than Bernathy. It is included in the A’s but it appears the initial “A” was dropped in typing. The Lewis Carig in box 18 is likely Craig rather than Carig. The @m Young in box 19 is likely Wm. rather than @m. The @ill Miller in box 22 is likely Will rather than @ill. The John, Jr., Sr. Walters in box 22 is printed as presented, with the “Jr.” and “Sr.” on the same line, separated by a comma. The Ja,es Carson in box 23 is likely James rather than Ja,es. Box 32 carries the note at the top of page one that “Tax list is not in this index”. Boldface numbers refer to the box records are stored in. Regular type numbers refer to the page. N. B. Box 20 of the Court Orders was missing from copies provided to the transcribers. 

This index is used as a finding aid for names that appear in the General Index to Suits Jessamine Circuit Court.  However, the General Index does not designate a first name, only surname, and in chronological order from 1799-1849, with all the same letter together, not necessarily in alphabetic order.
